The Ketogenic Diet – A Trend on the Rise

By | Supplements | No Comments

The ketogenic diet has been sky rocketing to fame. By looking on Google Trends you’ll see that the term keto is growing rapidly in popularity. The growth can be seen in both the food industry and the supplement industry.

A ketogenic diet (keto) is a low-carb diet, which turns the body into a fat-burning machine. It has many potential benefits for weight loss, health and performance. A ketogenic diet is similar to other strict low-carb diets, like the Atkins diet or LCHF (low carb, high fat). It offers you a solution for healthy eating that in turn helps you lose weight.

A keto diet is designed specifically to result in ketosis. It’s possible to measure and adapt to reach optimal ketone levels for health, weight loss, or for physical and mental performance.

When it coming to Keto Supplements, there are some great opportunities for growth in the industry. Supplements are starting to pop up with high doses of MCT oil, fats, and BHB’s. As the category grows we’re seeing more innovative formulations being developed. One of our favorites is coffee creamer. The combination of both caffeine and high fats has proven to be a successful recipe, and as everyone knows America runs on caffeine.

Depending on what type of supplement you’re looking at marketing, the ketogenic diet is a trend that is growing at a rapid rate and successful launch pads into the supplement industry or a vital add on to your product line.

Choosing the Right Sports Certification for your Supplements

By | Supplements | No Comments

When looking for third party certification for your sports supplements, there are a number of elements to look into. The testing of supplements for prohibited substances in sport has become a popular choice for most brands looking to provide elite athletes with their products.

There are a few certification options available to brands such as Informed-Choice, NSF Certified for Sport, BSCG, Aegis Sheild, and now Labdoor. When looking for the right certification there are a number of elements to look into. Not all certifications are the same, and in order to make sure that you get the best value from your certification here are a few areas to consider.

1.        What experience does the laboratory have? Anti-doping is an extremely complicated area. The anti-doping landscape is continually changing, and new compounds are regularly been discovered and banned. It’s essential that a brand looks for a certification body that has vast experience in the anti-doping industry, and keeps up with the ever changing landscape.

2.       Look at compounds that are covered. Unfortunately no laboratory can test a sports supplement for everything on the World anti-doping agency list, so it’s essential that a wide range of compounds are tested. Within the supplement industry new ingredients are regularly being launched that may be legal to use, but illegal in sports. It’s essential that the laboratory can keep up with the industry.

3.       Laboratory quality. A requirement for any quality laboratory is ISO17025 accreditation. This shows the laboratory has adequate procedures to carry out testing. As an additional requirement, a laboratory should have ISO17025 validation on the detection of the compound, a set detection limit, and the supplement type such as a capsule, tablet, powder or gel.

4.       Testing regularity. In most cases professional sport such as the NBA, MLB, NFL and others require that every batch of product they use be tested for banned substances in sport to provide additional quality assurance to their athletes. This is where it’s essential that the certification that a brand uses can meet the requirements of the professional teams.

Anaheim based contract manufacturer 4Excelsior attains international sports nutrition manufacturing certification Informed-Choice

Professional athletes such as Asafa Powell, Tyson Gay, and others have blamed the use of sports supplements for past failed doping tests.

International supplement quality assurance program Informed-Choice has identified supplement contamination to be an issue within the industry supply chain. One of the main sources of contamination of supplements, with prohibited substances in sport, is due to manufacturing facility equipment being contaminated.

To provide supplement brands with confidence in their quality assurance processes, 4Excelsior, a contact manufacturer of dietary supplements and sports nutrition products has attained the international sports nutrition manufacturing certification Informed-Choice.

The Informed-Choice certification requires that a facility does not carry, and or produce products containing ingredients that would be prohibited in sports by the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA), MLB, NFL, NCAA and the PGA. As part of the certification, the facility is audited every six months by Informed-Choice, this includes the swabbing and testing of facility machinery for trace residue of substances prohibited in sport.

“We are extremely proud of our achievement. Attaining the Informed-Choice sport facility certification provides our clients with complete confidence in the quality and integrity of our manufacturing facility.” said 4Excelsior President Lin Malcolm. “We understand the needs for supplement brands looking to supply professional athletes with product, and we want to make sure that brands have full confidence in our manufacturing quality.”

Informed-Choice’s Business Development Manager Paul Klinger commented, “The Informed-Choice sports facility certification helps provide brands with confidence in the quality of their contract manufacturer. We commend 4Excelsior on the completion of the Informed-Choice sports facility certification, as this provides supplement brands with an additional level of quality assurance needed when supplying products to professional athletes.”

As supplements continue to be an issue in the professional sporting world, the Informed-Choice certification provides a step forward for the sports nutrition manufacturing industry, by setting additional quality assurance standards within the supplement supply chain. 4Excelsior’s completion of the certification provides supplement brands with the assurance they need to be confident in 4Excelsior’s quality and manufacturing integrity.
